To: handstandcommand@yahoogroups.com Welcome to the Handstand Commandments, your monthly report concerning the Handstand Command, a music collective that features bands like The Operators, The Anchormen, Scrapple, The Tardy, Sinkcharmer, and others. Did you see our commercial that aired during the SuperBowl? In case you missed it, here's a quote from the most recent issue of Advertising Age: "...most puzzling was an ad from a product or service cryptically named the Headstand (sic) Command. Directed by British film director Mike Leigh, the 30-second spot profiled a working-class woman in Yorkshire and her relationships... with her alcoholic mother and severely disabled sister-in-law...We're not sure exactly what this was supposed to sell, but we can only assume it's a new brand of anti-depressants" It was the best $1.8 million dollars we've ever spent! Please buy our stuff, please see our shows (TWO SHOWS THIS WEEK): RECORDINGS: The Operators' and Sinkcharmer's wonderful albums continue to garnish rave reviews and even made it on to some Best Album of 2002 lists! Huzzah for our comrades. Buy them on our webiste or at your local hip record store. The Anchormen have just completed their much anticipated EP, NATION OF INTERNS. Expect it in a month or so, ok? Get off our backs! CALENDAR:

To: handstandcommand@yahoo.com We are the Handstand Command, a music collective based in Somerville, MA. We do not recommend renting the movie Tapeheads, despite these facts: it stars John Cusack with a bad moustache and a young, nerdy Tim Robbins, features cameos by Stiv Bator, Doug E. Fresh, Courtney Love, Michael Nesmith, and Jello Biafra as an FCC agent, and music by Devo and The Dead Kennedys. Somehow it manages to be awful dull. Just thought you'd like to know. This Thursday be sure to head over to the Abbey Lounge to check out the Handstand Command night. This month we've got the Operators playing some new stuff as well as songs off their still very boss album, _Citizens Band_. Also rocking will be the Count-Me-Outs and Tizzy. It shall be a lovely evening of rock. Beer=cheap. On Columbus Day, Monday, October 14, be sure to head over to the Kendall to catch Jef Czekaj performing R.E.M.s Life's Rich Pageant album in sequence in its entirety. Viva la "college rock"! Ms. Deb Klein of the Details and the Mary Reillys will be assisting him in this formidable task. Then that Friday enjoy the Tardy's triumphant return to the Milky Way. Save the dates: November 7, a FREE show at the Abbey and December 6, the 2nd annual Bazaar Bizarre, Punk Craft Fair, also FREE. CALENDAR:

To: handstandcommand@yahoo.com From: "Handstand Commando" Date: Tue, 3 Sep 2002 Subject: [handstandcommand] Handstand Commandments, Vol. III.V Good day and welcome to the monthly mailing of the Handstand Command, the Somerville-based music collective featuring bands you like. It's September, so it's back to school. ROCK SCHOOL! Get out your number two pencils. Your number two ROCK pencils! And your TrapperKeepers. Your ROCK TrapperKeepers! And your erasers. I guess just use your regular non-rock erasers. ROCK erasers are kind of expensive, and with budget cuts and all we here at ROCK SCHOOL need to tighten our belts a notch or two. Our ROCK belts!! Please come to the Abbey Lounge this Thursday, Sept. 5th for our monthly Handstand Command showcase. This month, the Anchormen host the In/Out and Tunnel of Love. We will pause here so you can make your own joke. The show will be awesome. MEDIA: For those of you who are subscribers to Somerville Cable, please catch a live performance of Sinkcharmer (along with a performance by our friends Spoilsport) every Friday in September at 8PM on channel 3. Also, Emily Operator occasionally hosts a fine local music show on WMFO, 91.5 FM, called On The Town. It features interviews, live performances, and the best in Boston music. You can hear it this month on Wednesday, September 11 at 9PM. CALENDAR:

To: handstandcommand@yahoogroups.com I do declare, Handstand Command is positively *wilting* in this heat. Quick, somebody fix us a mint julep before our carefully-drawn eyebrows begin to creep... Yes folks, it's quite steamy, this is a fact, but that's not stopping us from "rocking" or whatever it is that we do. In fact, so much is going on next week (including an addendum to this weekend's schedule) that we thought we'd drop you a line as a gentle reminder. **ALL NEW EVENT!** Saturday, August 17, 2002 Watch as Jen from the Operators and Greg of Pretty Pony fame make their drag debuts, karaoke-ing in the nice, warm clothing of the opposite gender! This is *not* duct-tape weather, folks, so come out and show your appreciation for those who dare to be so very un-bare, and maybe do a little of the 'oke yourself:

To: handstandcommand@yahoo.com From: "Handstand Commando" Date: Fri, 19 Jul 2002 Subject: [handstandcommand] Handstand Commandments, Vol. III.3 Good day. We are the Handstand Command, a music collective based in Somerville, MA. It is nice to see you again. Would you like a glass of lemonade? This weekend you'll want to check out Art Beat in Davis Square. The weekend-long celebration of arts in Somerville is always great, and this year promises to be no exception. There will be outdoor music performances (hosted by Handstand Command's own Leslie Case), food, art, comic-making and tons of activities on Saturday, and music, a film-festival, and a parade this evening. SPECIFICALLY please note the Sideshow on Saturday night: Combining a sideshow motif with the festival's "Food for Thought" theme, the night will feature burlesque performances, baton twirling, indie rock mixed with staged food-fights, a dance party with a DJ, and miscellaneous fun including carnival-inspired music, games, food, and art installations. A strong concentration of Handstand Command bands will be performing mini-sets and participating in various embarrassing activities. Then, next weekend, head over to Hi-Fi Records in Jamaica Plain, for an early, free, acoustic, smoke-free Sinkcharmer in-store. Bring your kids. Oh and lots of money with which you may pick up your favorite Handstand Command releases, such as the Sinkcharmer's Stars in Winter, or the Operators' Citizens Band. End the month the following Wednesday at the Midway Cafe for an evening with Jef and Steph (aka the Tardy) and their favorite indie-pop band, Spolisport. Okay? Okay. The details:

Thanks again to everyone who came out to and performed in the enormously fun anniversary residency at the Abbey Lounge. We couldn't think of a nicer way to spend our Wednesday nights. We're taking it relatively easy this month, nursing our month-long hangovers. But look out! Here comes a burst of an activity from the Operators this weekend (plus: buy their new album!) and then check out the Anchormen at TT's next Thursday. Calendar:

To: handstandcommand@yahoo.com From: "Handstand Commando" Date: Tue, 28 May 2002 Subject: [handstandcommand] Wednesday, May 29, The Handstand Command Finale! The Handstand Commandments, Vol. III.1.e Wed, May 29, Abbey Lounge: The Operators CD Release with Tizzy, Palomar and the Pee Wee Fist. Thanks to everyone that's made our residency at the Abbey Lounge so much fun! But wait, you're not done yet. This Wednesday the party ends with a CD release party from the one and only The Operators. It'll be your first chance to buy their debut album, Citizens Band, and the first time to see them play live in a while. The show starts promply at 9 (there's a lot of rocking to do), with Northampton's finest export, Tizzy. They're melodic and distorted and pop and punk and bursting with energy, with lots of harmonies and even more jumping up and down. You can not not like this band. Next up is Palomar, a great NYC band that plays gritty sing-song pop-rock. The Village Voice calls their music "Streamlined, stop-on-a-dime, hardcore-speed sha-la-la pop songs with fresh'n'clean four-part harmonies --." That means they rock. Handstand Command's The Operators, fresh-faced and well-rested from their month off, take the stage next to play selections off of their soon-to-be-critcally-acclaimed Citizens Band. Expect the live show, like the record, to be chock full of dueling guitars, weird time changes, and vocal harmonies. Mission of Burma versus the Breeders? Throwing Muses versus The Fall? Godzilla versus MechaGodzilla? And the residency comes to a wonderful conclusion with a performance by the legendary Pee Wee Fist. Difficult to describe and beautiful to watch, the Fist combine great songs with unique instrumentation (theremin? banjo? accordian? musical saw?) to create a sound that is truly their own. Okay. You should come. The show starts at 9. 3 Beacon St., Somerville, MA, just outside of Inman Square. There may be a pinata involved. Okay.
To: handstandcommand@yahoo.com The Handstand Commandments, Vol. III.1.d Wed, May 22, Abbey Lounge: Scrapple, Cathy Cathodic, Naughty Shirley. Okay. Remain calm. You have but two weeks left to help the Handstand Command celebrate its second anniversary as the only Somerville-based music collective that matters. (Worth noting: Once our residency ends we will return to the much less intrusive once a month e-mail rather than the weekly format.) This week Handstand Command invites one to get one's groove on with the self-proclaimed black sheep of the family, Scrapple. Enough of this indie/punk crap. DANCE!: The evening gets started with straight-up hip-hop from Cathy Cathodic. With lyrics that matter and beats to back them up, CC harkens back to the day when rappers actually had something to say. We feel funny saying this, but we do believe she hath "mad skillz." Scrapple, of course, is the meat of the evening. Featuring drum machines and a liv drummer, guitars, keyboards, soul-rumbling bass, deux chanteuses, a Geisslah, and occasionally a giant foam-rubber vagina (?!), we need not hesitate to say that an evening spent with Scrapple will be unlike one you've ever experienced. Bring protection. The night ends with the girl/girl duo, Naughty Shirley. Featuring Slamber from Pelvic Circus/Drag King fame and a drummer with an advanced degree in Rocking Your Ass, Naughty Shirley shall leave you begging for more. You know the drill by now. The show starts at 9. There is booze. 3 Beacon St., Somerville, MA, just outside of Inman Square. See you there. We'll be in the corner crying. THIS WEEK'S EXTRA CREDIT SHOWS:
THE ANCHORMEN
ASIAN BABE ALERT (Feat. Tom from the Anchormen) Next week the residency ends (whew!) with the Operators CD Release Party!!!
To: handstandcommand@yahoo.com Wed, May 15, Abbey Lounge: The In/Out, Sinkcharmer (CD Release), Swizzle, Mac Dare, plus special Twink CD Release Event! Thanks to everyone who has come to the previous two shows of the Handstand Command Residency at the Abbey Lounge (located just outside of Inman Square at 3 Beacon St, Somerville). The month-long party continues this week, this time hosted by Sinkcharmer. Four-trackers turned "real band" Sinkcharmer present a release party for their new, lush CD, Stars in Winter. Sinkcharmer features Paul and Jen from the Operators and Jef from the Anchormen. Helping them to celebrate will be Fall disciples The In/Out, pop-band-by-way-of-the-Velvet-Underground Swizzle, and sometimes Boy Named Thor member Mac Dare. The evening will also celebrate the release of Twink's debut disc, which will play in between acts. Twink's music, dance music composed on toy pianos, is the soundtrack to the elf and fairy rave. We are happy to report there will also be a coloring contest. It all happens at the Abbey Lounge on Wednesday, May 15 promptly at 9PM, so get there early because you don't want to miss any of the bands. Band Order: Mac Dare. Swizzle. Sinkcharmer. The In/Out. And are you sick of us yet?: THIS WEEK'S EXTRA CREDIT SHOWS:
The Tardy (Steph and Jef)
Then work off all of that pizza and beer the next afternoon at: Next weeks Abbey Show features the one and only Scrapple!
To: handstandcommand@yahoo.com The Handstand Commandments, Vol. III.1.b Wed, May 8, Abbey Lounge: The Count Me Outs, The Anchormen, Asian Babe Alert, Special Guests! The Handstand Command music collective continues its month-long residency at the Abbey Lounge (located just outside of Inman Square at 3 Beacon St, Somerville) with another great show, this one hosted by the Anchormen. As if you didn't know, The Anchormen is the best-dressed band since Huey Lewis and the News. They'll be playing songs off their upcoming EP as well as your old favorites. Insults will be hurled, historical figures referenced, hearts and guitar strings broken. Also, they'll rock.
It all happens at the Abbey Lounge on Wednesday, May 8, as they present (in order of appearance): The show starts promptly at 9PM, so get there early because you don't want to miss any of the bands. Next weeks Abbey Show features Sinkcharmer et al.!
